Passion for adventure and the need for research.

That is what inspired us to set up Muscles for Research. For the next four years, we want to flex our muscles to raise money for research into the muscle disease HMSN. 100% of donations go to the Dutch Prinses Beatrix Spierfonds.

Muscles

A seventy-day rowing trip with eight stops.

By pushing our limits, we can show what we are made of. To ourselves and to each other. That’s why Muscles for Research is taking on the Mediterranean with the Mediterranean Rowing Expedition. A rowing trip along the coast and across the open sea, with human muscle power only. 10,000 rowing movements per day. This gruelling rowing expedition will start in Gibraltar and finish in Athens.

Research

DNA decides your life.

That is a cold, hard fact. Over the next four years, we want to flex our muscles for those people who have lost or will lose the power to do so in the future. Because research is desperately needed.

This charity was chosen because one of the participants has a family member who suffers from the hereditary muscle disease HMSN. This condition affects the nerves and as a result the muscles become weaker and weaker. The cause of HMSN is yet unknown and the disease has not yet been cured. Scientific research into HMSN is mainly aimed at finding the cause and developing a drug.

Initiator

Peter Arensman is an outdoor sports fanatic and climbed Mount Everest three years ago. His family was diagnosed with HMSN.

Since the muscle-disease HMSN runs in my family, I am very conscious of the importance of sports. Exercise is essential for me. If anything is worth fighting for – it has to be this.
